The Serpent Seed Doctrine

Post by Nahumatarah »

The Bible Genesis 3:14-15 wrote:So the Lord God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.
The doctrine of the serpent seed explains the biblical account of the fall of man by stating that the Serpent mated with Eve in the Garden of Eden, and the offspring of their union resulted in the creation of two races of people; the wicked descendants of the Serpent who were destined for damnation, and the the righteous descendants of Adam who were destined to have eternal life. This teaching appears for example in the early Gnostic writings of Valentinus, and has prominence in some modern Christian groups as well as in some forms of Satanism. What do you think of this teaching? Does it hold place in your beliefs?

I don't know how exact this translation is, but "enmity between your and her offspring" sounds to me as two different offsprings, two sources and not their mutual offspring.

At the moment I come to a comparative interpretation through our Poimandres reading circle. In this text belonging to the Corpus Hermeticum, there is a point in emanation where the four elements are being made distinct from the prima materia (as alchemists would surely call it) and this results the fire and air being separated from the water and earth. The former pair rose above to the heights while the latter elements were left below due to to their heavy nature. Here we can see, on the level of the elements, the basic division to the polarities (of the sexes), which is also present in the creation myth of Genesis.

As different animals can be seen partially symbolizing the various spirits of the elements, à la bestiaries of old, the curse casted on the snake seems to speak of the down casting weight of these lower elements (interesting note is that water serpents are also very usual in mythologies and nature in addition to the one's crawling on Earth). Thus in the light of the separation of the elements in Poimandres, I see the serpents seed to hold qualities that could be pointed very close to the weighting qualities of the lower elements that correspond to the intelligence of Saturn, while the female spawn and the downfall is also quite clearly close to the ideas behind Venus-Lucifer.

These point us quite directly to 1 Enoch where the falling angels (Azazel amongst them) procreated with the daughters of men. Could the serpent seed be seen as the masculine "seed" which impregnated the daughters of men within the world coming after the paradise (within the procreation of Eve) and subsequentially created the Nephilim? This would make 1 Enoch an elaboration of what happened within the worlds created in the polarizing division of Adam, and Eve from his side (rib). And the procreation of them separately could be seen as the smaller spirits within these entities. In the case of Eve, perhaps they could be seen as the shadows of Eve that were born in a sort of onanistic ouroboroic way. This makes the sensory world a sort of ovum abortivum of Eve, which fittingly points the serpent seed as the root cause of constant disappearance/death of all in the sensory world. It seems to be the root of temporality.
