Los sin nombre made big impression on me back then. I was a fan of horror genre, but not anymore. (except stupid trash gore etc).Because the movies are so bad and the scare factor also disappeared at some point. The last good horror film I've seen, was The Mist (2007) by Frank Darabont.

I tried to check Los Sin Nombre out, but the copy I downloaded was dubbed into Russian . Will try again sometime.

Anyway, I finally got round to watching Stalker by Tarkovsky, which has various supernatural elements that could be interpreted as related to esotericism at least. The film concerns a man (a ‘stalker’) who is paid to lead a writer and a scientist through a mysterious zone of incredibly Soviet wasteland to a room that grants anyone’s deepest wish.

The way to the room can’t be mapped and has to be felt intuitively by a stalker. Anyone who aimlessly blunders about or tries to retrace their journey runs a very strong risk of disappearing without a trace. It also seems that anyone who tries to use weaponry is punished severely. The stalker, writer and scientist have relatively stereotypical traits which I guess is to underline the intuitive, artistic and philosophical impulses. Yet, in my opinion at least, they frequently contradict themselves in both words and actions which makes everything more unpredictable and interesting.

As a side note, I don’t think it’s possible not to immediately think of Chernobyl due to the decaying Soviet architecture and the fact that the stalker has a child who has physical deformities that are blamed on his travels in the zone. However, the film was released years before the accident which gives the film an even weirder effect.

Did you know the film was destroyed and they had to re-shoot the whole thing? It's a great film. You might be interested in Solaris also, though it's not as good and I would recommend the book instead. I can't remember seeing other Tarkovsky movies. Should go find them in the library.

Since there's TV in the title of the thread, let's ask a TV question of everyone. When was the last time you've seen a good horror/supernatural show? I can't even think of one that's watchable. I've tried some of the recent ones, just looking for something relaxing. Nothing really works. They seem to be made for children.

Just watched the American Horror Story Season 2 (I liked the second season more). I think it's pretty good, even the name of the series might point to another direction. Carnivale is good, Riget by Trier. But these two are not so new.

Puella magi madoka magica.
A tv-series + 1 movie "rebellion".
It's anime about magical school girls who end up fighting evil and stuff (seriously). Best thing I've come across in a long time.

I do like anime, but not like I used to. I was a fan of almost everything from Nippon. This has faded largely and I don't have that much patience anymore, for the Japanese weirdness. (Also I don't listen to Japanese noise and impro stuff very much anymore.) Anime is a great form and might deserve a thread just for it, because there's so much truly strange and wonderful stuff. Cowboy Bebop is one of the greatest shows in the world ever. Since we were talking about horror stuff, I'll mention Gantz. I found this show so disturbing, that I had to wait a while after two episodes, to be in a less fragile state. The whole show (26 episodes) is a long nightmare. So obviously recommended.

Speaking of anime. Have you seen "Yondemasuyo, Azazel-san"?

Frater Teratokrios pointed this out to me. I don't know if I disliked it or not, I don't think I possess the correct mindset to view it. It's very hyper. It was easier to follow after a few beers.

When I was in Finland me and Fomalhaut watched Event Horizon, a film I hadn’t seen for years and hadn’t thought about aside from as a normal horror film. We decided to watch it as it was on a supposedly Lovecraft-influenced list of films, but I thought it was much more similar to the Hellraiser films. While not giving away too much, the film centres on people’s acceptance of their worst fears, memories etc. regarding death. Naturally the only person who eventually embraces this aspect of life turns into the bad guy – but in a way strongly reminiscent of Pinhead – while the most repressive is the ultimate hero. The conflict is still interesting when interpreted in this context though and especially in the multi-dimensional sci-fi setting. Anyway, if people want to see a mix of Hellraiser demonic aesthetics with the architectural aesthetics of Alien, then this is perfect.

That's the only decent movie by the director of the crappy and not even funny Resident Evil series. This is an english movie, which might not be obvious. Good soundtrack. Worth watching, as a rare viable sci-fi horror.

It recently occurred to me that I don’t think Kenneth Anger’s been mentioned anywhere on the forum. I don’t think he made any ‘full-length’ films, just short art-house stuff. The only one I’ve seen is Lucifer Rising (which can be found on Youtube), which I like primarily because Bobby Beausoleil did the fantastic soundtrack. Not knowing a huge amount about Thelema, I’m not really how well I did regarding its interpretation, but apparently it’s his least accessible film so perhaps I should finally get round to watching Scorpio Rising :P. Anyway, does anyone have any opinions about Anger and his work?
