Artistic representations of Satan & other LHP deities

In this topic we can link and discuss different representations of Satan, Lucifer and other "LHP deities" and all the symbological aspects they reveal (and hide).

I'll start with my long-time favourite, which is the pictorial / alchemical representation of "a Saturnal Goat", and of which symbology is very "ascensive":



If someone knows where this is from or who has made it, I'd be interested.

Very nice and interesting art, I checked whose art it is but could not find any information. I was thinking can the person who sits down be Cain? There is a sickle in his hand and there is one other person running through to Goat and his/her hands are wide open and I see a snake under his/her legs. I was wondering can that person be Cain's wife and the child is their son?

Thanks to frater Surya-Ishtara for pointing out him and his work for me. He has certainly made some outstanding artworks in his time.

As one can see from the link above, the work is a part of Johfra's Zodiac series, and this one delves especially around Capricorn and thus Saturn. The old man with a sickle in his hands and who is sitting inside the cave is also Saturn; the symbolism in the painting in general circles around Saturn (i.e. time and its corresponding imagery), as can be expected and understood. There are even the glyphs of the angels & spirits of Saturn and its seal at the forefront of the picture (down left and right front corner). The artist certainly seems to have made his researches when making these 12 paintings.

As for your question, I think it is not impossible for those figures to be Cain and his son ("the children of Satan"), but I strongly doubt this is what the artist himself has meant when making them. I'd associate them with the concept of 'palingenesis' and rejuvenation, with the "the bright face of Satan".

Successive from Heith's post, I randomly came across this painting called Wasser und Feuer by Franz von Stuck. I have to say I really like his style.



One of the few pieces of art in the house I grew up in was Hieronymus Bosch's Garden of Earthly Delights so I've always felt familiar with his work and drawn to things of a similar style. Actually, I think von Stuck is similar in a way, although he seems to focus on one or two individuals whereas Bosch rarely did this. Probably my favourite painting of Bosch's is Ascent of the Blessed. Along with stuff like Milton's Paradise Lost, I consider it to be a sort of proto science fiction. While the painting's obviously supposed to show angels leading people to heaven, the angels themselves look quite demonic, while the passage to heaven could also appear to be an oubliette or something similar.



I only personally own three proper pieces of art due to moving around constantly as a student and living in crappy places that got damp and mouldy all the time. All three prints that I own are of self portraits by Jeroen van Valkenburg that appeared as the album covers for Stalaggh's trilogy. Again, I consider these to be similar to the style of Bosch and von Stuck. I like looking at these sort of paintings in a similar way to the way directors often let the audience themselves impute emotions onto an actor's face rather than actively depict anything specific. Obviously the facial expression reduces the possible range of emotions that can be ascribed, but I still think a relatively large range is still possible.



Honoré Fragonard was a French anatomist who created sculptures out of the remains of people and animals in the 18th century. He was eventually fired from his job for being insane. It's very easy to see why he would've been accused of this as his creations look like medieval versions of the Cenobites of Hellraiser.



I know these aren't deities or anything specifically LHP related, but I didn't think it was necessary to create a new thread. I also know practically nothing about specific styles of art and so on, so apologies if any ramblings of mine make no sense . Also, apologies for the large size of some of the pictures - I'm not sure how to post scaled down versions.

I very much liked your art, Seeker666, thanks for posting it. Is there a model for these pictures in the book you mentioned, or did you form the symbolic representation yourself?

Also the latter picture. To me the most interesting thing is how one of the axis' of the evangelists has been reversed, & the other one not. Such a reversal of St. Luke with Taurus & St. John with Aquila has always been extremely important to me.

(Usually the Eagle, depicting St. John's Eagle as in constellation Aquila close to Scorpio of the Zodiac, is at the lower left of the World/Pantocrator picture, while the Bull, depicting St. Luke's constellation Taurus, is to its opposite at the upper right corner. Here they're interchanged.)
